The Oratory Society
The Oratory Society is a Christian community of bishops, priests, deacons, and laypeople, and part of the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church. Our heritage is ancient; our vision is modern.
We govern ourselves according to our own canons and episcopal structure while remaining in full spiritual communion with the broader Church, upholding the Deposit of Faith handed down since the apostles.
Honouring our rich heritage from the Church founded on the apostle Peter, we recognise his successors as "the first among equals" in the global community of bishops with Apostolic Succession. The Oratory Society comprises Oratories (chapels) where small Christian communities gather to celebrate the Eucharist, the other six sacraments, and to proclaim the Word of God.
Our mission is to seek out and embrace all of God's children, especially those on the margins of the Church and society. We strive to see the "imago Dei" (image of God) in every face and to love each person as God does, regardless of age, gender, sexuality, origin, or socio-economic background.
We acknowledge our diverse gifts of the Holy Spirit and recognize that we do not have all the answers or resources to meet every challenge. Therefore, we are committed to collaborating with other Christians and people of goodwill to work for unity, justice, peace, and reconciliation within the faith community and society at large.
A Little History
THE ORATORY SOCIETY was founded by Fr Pat Buckley in the summer of 1986 at 6 Princes Gardens, Larne, County Antrim, Northern Ireland.
It was named THE ORATORY as that title was considered to be a neutral name; a neutral name being deemed necessary to reach out to all Christians in a society that, for the most part, appeared to splintered down a Catholic/Protestant divide.
